bike-trails, run

Take a 14-mile bike ride along the Potomac with the kids, rewarded by the excitement of planes landing and taking off.

At approximately seven miles each direction, this is a challenging ride for little ones, but doable. We did the ride with our 3 and 5-year-olds, and while they are used to long hikes, this was the first time we've done a bike ride of that length, and they loved it! There are a few steep points, and I wouldn't go on a gorgeous weekend or during a very busy time of day, because they obviously will feel more comfortable doing it at their own pace. I also wouldn't have done it without an adult to child ration of 1:1, but older kids would also have a blast on this trip.

To start, park at the Belle Haven Mt. Vernon Trail Parking Area, adjacent to Belle Haven Marina and Dyke Marsh Nature Preserve. There are restrooms available there if that is needed before heading out. Bring water as well as sufficient snacks to keep energy high and attitudes positive.

There are plenty of places to stop along the way and get pictures and take a water or snack break.

The pinnacle of the adventure is at the end of the out portion of the ride, at Gravelly Point. There is ample space to spread out, if there are a lot of picnickers, as there are at times. Consider bringing a picnic and maybe a blanket. If you are able to get a good spot to see the end of the runway at Reagan, settle in, ideally toward the water on the right side of the park near the rocky area and clearing in the trees. Your kids will be thrilled at the planes taking off and landing, and when it's time to head home they will have a little adrenaline rush to boost their enthusiasm for the trip back.

When you get back to the parking lot, if you didn't bring a picnic head over to Belle Haven Pizzeria across GW Parkway for lunch or an early dinner, or just grab a delicious cone at The Custard Shack during the warmer months.
