Mountain biking is one of my favorite sports and Teton Valley offers a wide array of single-track trails for everyone to enjoy. In my experience, this is one of the best activities for you and your family to get out and do together. It’s challenging but leads to fruitful experiences that provide comradery, connection, fun, joy, adventure, and lots of laughter.
Grand Targhee offers over 7 miles of family-friendly and beginner trails. If you’re ready for more challenging terrain, there are miles of trails around the resort to give a try. You can practice skill building in the three different bike skill zones. These areas allow your family to practice pumping, cornering, rolling hills, and even jumping off of things! You can ride the cross-country trails that are all around Targhee or opt for downhilling and tak the chair lift up.
To keep your younger children engaged, Buddy Pegs Media and Grand Targhee have set up a singletrack scavenger hunt. They can pick up a scavenger hunt passport at the Activity Center to keep track of all of their destinations. Once they’ve found everything they need, they can bring it back to the Activity Center to receive a special prize. More information about the scavenger hunt can be found here: https://www.grandtarghee.com/family-mountain-biking-at-grand-targhee/.
If you’re ready for more challenging terrain, some of my favorite trails are located on the side of Targhee where the Black Foot chairlift is. I recommend taking Yogi to Pika Traverse until you come to a three-way intersection. If you go right, you’ll climb up More Cowbell and head to Perma-Gin. More Cowbell has a series of switchbacks that are a bit steep and take you to a trail called Perma-Grin. Perma-Grin is fun, fast, flowy, and leaves you smiling the whole time; hence the name! Instead of doing these trails, if you go left at the intersection, you can head out to Snowdrift or Rick’s Basin. Snowdrift has a few technical sections of rocks that are fun to practice your skills on! It’s a quick loop but has a lot to offer. Rick’s Basin is a nice mellow cruise through some of the most gorgeous wildflowers! There are a number of other trails to try as well, these just happen to be some of my favorite family-friendly ones.
At the end of your ride, you can enjoy locally made ice-cream from Snorkels cafe and have a meal from one of the different restaurants at Targhee or in downtown Driggs.
