A Kid-Friendly Hike to the Historic, Beautiful Montgomery Bell Waterfall Tunnel.
This is a great, short hike with kids that leads to the "tunnel" of the Narrows of the Harpeth - aka the Montgomery Bell Tunnel. It is short, relatively shaded and the destination is picturesque and unique. According to Middle Tennessee Tourism, "It is 290-feet long and runs through limestone rock. Built in 1819 by Montgomery Bell, it was the first full-scale water diversion tunnel built in the United States and is now a part of Harpeth River State Park. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1994."
Leaving the parking lot, wind through the woods and river, and enjoy several views of the surrounding land. About a third of a mile in, hike up some steps that lead to stunning vistas of the surrounding area. After a bit, you will be asked to stop at the beginning of private property. Despite that, the views are worth going up. Returning, keep going towards the "tunnel". There is a small rocky pool at the base but no swimming. Make sure to get a photo opportunity above the tunnel.
