Revel in Nature's Splendor while biking, walking, or driving on the National Elk Refuge Road!

Jackson Hole boasts no shortage of breathtaking views to drink in, but on the Elk Refuge Road, the scenery is relentless and the wildlife is everywhere. In the colder seasons, you can see the massive herd of elk, and in the warmer seasons, they'll see the majestic Big Horn Sheep.

This quiet, scenic stretch of road is great for biking. Cars do pass by but typically at slower speeds due to all of the foot and bike traffic the road sees.

Driving down the three-and-a-half mile long road and searching for animals in the distance is a fun activity to partake in. Sometimes the sheep will walk right up to your car to lick the salt off of it! After you pass Miller Butte on your left, the Tetons will explode into view – becoming more captivating as you continue your drive. There are always a few other bikers, walkers, and drivers soaking it all in, but never too many that you’ll feel overwhelmed.

Emily Coleman
Emily Coleman is a Jersey girl born and raised who caught the outdoor bug upon moving to Vermont to pursue a degree in Adventure Education and Environmental Studies from Green Mountain College. She spent most of her years before college deeply entrenched in the world of competitive cheerleading before discovering a passion for outdoor sports including mountain biking, white water kayaking, bikepacking, backpacking, slacklining, rock climbing, and skiing. Having been surrounded by children her entire life in her mother's daycare, she always had a strong affinity for kids. She moved to the mountains of Jackson Hole after graduating to coach for the local Kayak Club during the summers and nanny in the winters. Becoming a part of the Happy Active Family team felt like the perfect collision of her passion for building strong community bonds and encouraging an outdoor lifestyle.
