Don't Miss a Visit to this Historic College Campus

The US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD may not at first seem like a family outing destination. Once through those gates however you’ll soon find 338 acres of American history and tradition designed not only to educate and prepare future Navy Officers, but to welcome those of us looking for a unique view into how these officers live and train.  Since 1845 the Naval Academy has trained naval officers, first in the skills and strategies specific to naval warfare, however since then the academy has grown to provide a Bachelors of Science in various fields before committing graduates to their service as naval officers.

Security at the visitors entrance will politely screen you and your photo id prior to admission, which is free.  (A note about security- Signs posted indicate that bags larger than a pocket book will not be permitted. However, when we arrived with a backpack that was obviously full of kid related supplies, our particular security screener allowed it. We were told however that they will absolutely NOT let in any visitor over the age of 21 that does not have a photo ID).

Past the entry you’ll find the visitors’ center which provides infographic displays and memorabilia recounting notable pieces of academy history.  The kids loved learning about Bill, the Naval Academy’s official goat mascot through the years. We were able to talk to them about all sorts of Naval Academy fields of study and graduates including, but certainly not limited to astronauts, war heroes and even presidents.

Make sure to ask the friendly and helpful staff for a map, which they’ll likely highlight for you based on what you’re interested in seeing.  We were perilously close to lunchtime so we made sure to visit the crypt of John Paul Jones (beautifully and solemnly constructed of black and white marble) and the dorms where you can step inside a model dorm room to see how midshipmen live while at school.  The next time we’ll be sure to visit the chapel to see breathtaking architecture and Italian stained glass and the museum that houses 2 floors of naval artifacts, audio and video displays and welcomes over 100,000 visitors a year.

Depending on when you’re there you may stumble upon midshipmen performing drills in the courtyard.  Please stop to take it in but make sure to remain quiet and respectful while they impress with their displays of discipline and ritual (imagine taking a walk and having a small parade spontaneously break out in front of you).  If you have time, try to take advantage of one of their guided tours, either by appointment or if you’re fortunate enough to happen upon one when you’re there. Everything here has a meaningful history and it’s worth it to learn as much as you can.  If you're just looking for a place to get in some steps, the Naval Academy grounds also make a picturesque location for stroller running or walking.

The Naval Academy is only a few blocks from the City Dock area of downtown Annapolis so a visit can easily be accompanied by a full scale day trip to the waterfront where you’ll find no shortage of sightseeing, restaurants and shops for every member of your family.  All day parking is available in various parking garages, at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium or at two-hour parking meters around the City Dock. We parked in a lot for $3 per hour. Do yourself a favor and park the car, buy yourself a few hours then hit the pavement to see a town rich with history.  Virtually every other house seems to have a placard designating its place on the National Register of Historic Places, but the grounds of the US Naval Academy will provide plenty of memories beckoning you to return for more.
