Stop off at the New York Transit Museum to travel back in time!

Most subway entrances lead down to a real station, but those in-the-know know that the entrance at 99 Schermerhorn Street in downtown Brooklyn leads instead to a world of exploration – the New York Transit Museum, an educational stop you definitely won't want to miss!

Cleverly situated in an abandoned station, the museum is full of facts and information about New York’s transportation systems as they have evolved throughout the years. You can climb aboard buses and trolleys and get behind the wheel. Learn from the rotating exhibits near the front of the museum, which might feature topics like the evolution of fare collection, a poignant memorial to disasters on the tracks, or fun features like how the subways were built.

Be sure to descend to the lower level because the Vintage Fleet is the most magical part. Restored subway cars from throughout the city’s history line the tracks, the oldest dating back to 1907. Each car boasts period seating and advertisements. Kids will be thrilled opening doors, ringing bells, and testing out the seats from throughout the years!

The museum has restrooms with changing tables and a gift shop that sells a few snacks, but there is no café on site.
