The North Carolina Arboretum is a 434 acre property consisting of perfectly manicured gardens and miles of well maintained hiking trails. Located in South Asheville and within Bent Creek, the Arboretum is a great place to reconnect with nature. Whether you prefer walking paved paths filled with labeled flowers and plants, grabbing your bikes and hitting the graveled trails, or a day mixed with both, the arboretum is the perfect place to spend your day.
The main gardens are located in the center of the property, in between the education center and the main exhibit building. Pick up a grounds map at either location to help guide your day. There are also bathrooms and water fountains in both buildings and a cafe in the eduction center to grab lunch or a snack. Kids of all ages love to wander the countless bridges, gardens, arbors, and fountains. A model train village runs daily and is a favorite with the kids and kids at heart! There always seems to be a seasonal exhibit on display as well. Our personal favorites include when they turn the greenhouse into a butterfly garden in the Spring, and the Winter Lights display at Christmas time!
When you’re done walking the gardens head down one of the gravel trails into the woods. The Arboretum offers an expansive trail system that is easy to follow. Hikers, bikers, and dog walkers are all welcome. The main path follows the creek and has many places for kids to wade in and play in the water, it isn’t hard to find a private spot and enjoy nature!
