For a gorgeous sunset or sunrise view, check out Ocean Beach!

This white sandy beach is a favorite for relaxing and beautiful walks, runs, and kite flying. The sunniest months are September and October, as the beach is almost always covered in fog throughout late spring and summer. There are fire rings between stairwells 15 through 20, if you’d like to make a bonfire, enjoy a picnic and watch the sun set over the ocean. It is also the perfect place to bring your pup and let them run wild in the sand, as dogs are allowed off leash as long as they are under voice control. Leashes are required from Sloat Blvd to Stairwell 21.

Please note that this beach is NOT safe for swimming due to dangerous rip currents and frigid water temperatures! If you have littles with you, just make sure they stay away from the water and bring lots of sand toys to make some epic castles. I would recommend bringing a jacket or sweater to stay warm, since the temperatures are a bit cooler and it can be quite windy, even on a summer day.

You can park in the Ocean Beach Parking Lot along the Great Highway across from Golden Gate Park or try to take public transportation if you can. To add to your trip, on the southern side of Ocean Beach, you will find the San Fransisco Zoo with several rare animals! There are also some historic windmills nearby if you’d like to check those out.

Emily Coleman
Emily Coleman is a Jersey girl born and raised who caught the outdoor bug upon moving to Vermont to pursue a degree in Adventure Education and Environmental Studies from Green Mountain College. She spent most of her years before college deeply entrenched in the world of competitive cheerleading before discovering a passion for outdoor sports including mountain biking, white water kayaking, bikepacking, backpacking, slacklining, rock climbing, and skiing. Having been surrounded by children her entire life in her mother's daycare, she always had a strong affinity for kids. She moved to the mountains of Jackson Hole after graduating to coach for the local Kayak Club during the summers and nanny in the winters. Becoming a part of the Happy Active Family team felt like the perfect collision of her passion for building strong community bonds and encouraging an outdoor lifestyle.
