Open City is One of NW Washington, D.C.'s Premier Pit Stops for Family-Friendly Food!

For coffee, breakfast, lunch, or an ice cream, stop in at Open City in the shadow of the National Cathedral with your kids. This is such a beautiful spot to take a break and connect with family. The menu offers so many delicious items including avocado toast, oatmeal, quiches, waffles, soups, sandwiches, salads, and baked goods. The coffee menu is also very impressive and offers many options. The lavender hot chocolate or latte are very popular! Be sure to take advantage of their seasonal offerings as they are always stellar. The cafe also serves old school soft serve ice cream with sprinkles that definitely is an all-around pleaser.

While the cafe is small and quite popular, the food often comes out quickly so the line moves along at a good pace. There are puzzles and games to entertain the kiddos, which is a plus. The atmosphere is relaxing and the cafe has a European feel to it. You can also grab your coffee or pastries to-go and walk around the Bishops Garden with the kids if sitting isn't in the agenda for the morning.

There are a few designated parking spaces for the Café, or street parking nearby on Wisconsin or neighboring streets around the Cathedral.

If it’s a nice day, the café is adjacent to the beautiful Bishops Garden, which is wonderful spot for a picnic or for the kids to run around on the lawn. Beauvoir Playground is also right down the street and offers a unique play experience for your little ones after they have eaten their fill. This is a great spot to add into your day if you are in the area and is a gem around the beautiful National Cathedral.

Elizabeth Regard
Liz Regard was raised in Pottstown, PA and first came to DC for college. After a four-year stint in New York City in the buying office of Bloomingdales after graduating, she returned to the DC area for law school and never left. It’s been 19 years and counting! She lives in Dupont Circle with her husband, Dan, their girls, Amelia and Felicity, and dog, Rugby, and works part-time for an international trade law firm. While Liz always liked exploring the city before the girls came on the scene, having kids opened up a whole new world of adventure. Everyone was happier when they were outside, so Liz spent a lot of time online researching fun activities and destinations. She really needed Happy Active Family. Now, she’s just excited to be creating this amazing resource for families across the nation with her friend, Caitlin. In their free time, Liz and her family love to travel and are slowly trying to visit every playground in the DMV area.
