Planting Fields is a gem of a botanical garden, set in the historic town of Oyster Bay, under an hour from downtown Manhattan.

This is a green oasis with a beautiful period mansion, Coe Hall, extensive grounds to wander, an excellent greenhouse, and cultural events throughout the year.

If you just want to come for a botanical wander, make the greenhouse your first stop. There is a scavenger hunt card for kids, and my son will happily explore in the cactus room for ages. Be sure to check out the camellia festival in the winter, when the red blooms are ablaze and a welcome distraction from winter white!

If wandering the arboretum is too much for little legs (there are over 400 acres!), at least make a stop in the garden situated just off the entrance. We’ve done hunts for every color flower in the rainbow in this gorgeous garden. Bathrooms are located just down the path, including changing tables, and there is a café that serves coffee and light fare.

But what Planting Fields does best are its cultural events throughout the year. Make sure to stop in for Arbor Day, where kids can plant a tree with Smokey the Bear. The day also features a model train exhibit, tree climbing, live music, and more.

We also never miss the chance to see Coe Hall decorated at Christmas, featuring glittering trees in every room, a roving chorus of carolers, hot cocoa and crafts, and Santa Claus himself.

Planting Fields also hosts outdoor concerts in the evenings, summer through fall. Pull up with a picnic blanket and a basket packed with supper, and enjoy music on the green fields for a perfect summer night.
