hikes, outdoor-adventures

If it's possible to forget you're in New York City, an afternoon of walking through the dirt trails in the woods of Prospect Park Trails & Audubon Center might do the trick!

While most of the park is manicured and most visitors find themselves walking/running/biking on the 3.35-mile paved route around the park perimeter, there are tons of hidden dirt trails to walk, streams to jump over, and fallen trees to climb.

Most hikes are best reached by starting at the Prospect Park Audubon Center and walking along one of the adjoining dirt trails into the true wilderness in the center of the park. While at the Audubon Center, take a few minutes to pop inside, speak to the tour guides, and look at some of the interactive exhibits. The Center is housed in a Beaux-Arts style boathouse overlooking the calm Lullwater, a waterway that flows into larger Prospect Park Lake and is perfect for skipping rocks and throwing twigs.

Renee was born in rural Maine and spent her childhood days playing in the woods and tending to her family's farm animals and large garden. She's spent the last 20 years far from her rural roots, living in large cities both in the US and abroad. Her family -- including her two daughters, age 6 and 10 -- just recently located to Brooklyn, New York after spending two years living abroad in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Renee looks forward to exploring and discovering all of the active, family-friendly activities that Brooklyn has to offer!
