The Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Garden is truly a hidden gem in Baltimore. Nestled in the heart of Druid Hill Park, the conservatory was opened in 1888 and is the second oldest glass conservatory in the United States.
The conservatory features 5 “houses” that are home to plants from different environments all over the world. Families can explore a Mediterranean House, Tropical House, Desert House, Palm House as well as an Orchid Room.
The conservatory is small but the interesting variety of plants definitely keeps the kids engaged. When you’re done exploring the conservatory, go outside and check out the botanic gardens. If you’ve packed a picnic, you can also grab a table in the shade to enjoy your meal.
Technically admission is free but they do ask for a donation of $5 per person to help maintain the facility. If you have any questions, stop by the front desk before you leave. The volunteers are more than happy to tell kids more about the plants that they’ve seen inside. You can also call into an info line while you’re there to learn about different plants along the way.
Keep in mind that the conservatory is a greenhouse. It’s a great option on rainy or cooler days, but is pretty sweltering on days that are hot and sunny. The grounds and building have some small bumps but are otherwise both stroller and baby carrier friendly. You can also gain access to a bathroom inside.
