The playground at Rockville Centre’s John A. Anderson Recreation Centre was completely gutted and renovated in summer 2017, and parents in this area of Long Island’s south shore rejoiced! Not only is the new playground innovative and imaginative, but it has a water feature, which was sorely needed in the neighborhood during hot summer months.

The emphasis here is on kids aged 2 to 5. Although there is one stand-alone structure for bigger kids, aged 5 to 8, and a section of “big kid” swings, the majority of the equipment is for the preschool set.

We love the whimsical touches, like the Hans Christian Anderson theme to one section; it looks like a pirate ship on one side and a fairy tale castle on the other. Kids will love moving elements, like fish knobs that turn, and a big “submarine” window to peer through.

There is a sand play area with still more whimsy, in the form of a rainbow-colored seal. The rec center provides buckets and shovels, so there’s no need to bring yours from home.

Another section features musical elements like a giant xylophone,, as well as stand-alone structures meant to look like a mechanic’s shop or a car.

Finally, there is a more traditional structure with plenty of slides, stairs, and ladders to scamper all over.

The best part is that the rec center is right there. That means bathrooms are clean and easily accessible, including changing tables, and there is some play equipment inside the lobby in case the day turns too hot, too cold, or rainy. Kids love stopping by the colorful birds and fish tank in the lobby too!

As mentioned, the renovation included installation of a water feature. With the press of a button, water sprays from a tall post and a few shorter ones. So don’t forget to pack a bathing suit and/or a change of clothes if you’re visiting in the summer!
