Red Canoe in Hamilton, Baltimore

Red Canoe Cafe has been a staple in the Harford Road community of Hamilton for over 15 years and it’s easy to see why. This family friendly coffee shop serves up delicious baked goods, sandwiches, salads, not to mention a hearty breakfast menu.

What makes this a neighborhood favorite is the cozy vibe and exceedingly kid-friendly setup. The back room is full of toys and separated just enough from the rest of the cafe that you won’t be worried if the kids get too rowdy. This is especially nice if you want to take your time while you enjoy your coffee. (We’ve spent many a lazy Saturday morning slowly sipping lattes while the kids happily play with the puzzles, play kitchen and books that Red Canoe provides.)

While Harford Road is full of tons of kid-friendly restaurant options like Emma’s Tea Spot and Silver Queen Cafe, Red Canoe is the only one that offers an outdoor space. There isn’t quite enough room for kids to run around, but they can certainly stretch out and enjoy some fresh air if the weather is nice. (An important note, Red Canoe is closed on Sunday and Monday! If you need a coffee fix on one of those days, just head to Zeke's Coffee that's up the road!)

The area has paid street parking, but you can also park for free in the Safeway lot that is just up the road at 4401 Harford Rd, Baltimore, MD 21214. If you’re in the area and need a coffee break or just someplace to spend an hour on a rainy day, Red Canoe is a great option!

Our work in Baltimore is truly a family affair. Husband and wife, Matt and Katie, work together to head up our ambassador team in Charm City. Katie is a Maryland native and has lived in the state her whole life. She moved to Baltimore in 2007 after graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. She has been working in the field of early childhood education as a teacher and family coach for the past 12 years. Katie also holds a Masters of Education in Literacy from Loyola University. She is passionate about giving kids and families the knowledge and tools that they need to thrive. Matt grew up in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore. As a city native, Matt is a great resource on all that the city has to offer. After months of helping Katie explore the city for her role at a Happy Active Family, he decided to put his love of writing to use and officially come on board as an ambassador. Matt and Katie have two girls, ages 5 and 7. They spend their weekends camping, hiking, or exploring other hidden gems in their area. Tap into their insider knowledge by downloading the app today!
