This is a great experience with a lot of different parts to explore on western Long Island.

Sagamore Hill is rife with history; home to Theodore Roosevelt and often his White House away from the White House, big kids may love soaking up the history to be had, both in tours of the main house (for a small fee) and in the informative museum (for free), which details both the philanthropic and swashbuckling days of our 25th president.

But our favorite part of Sagamore Hill, which is part of the National Park system, is to wander the wooded nature trails. You’ll be in good company no matter the season or weather, as the park is quite popular with hikers and dog walkers. It’s too uneven for strollers, so bring along the backpack or front-carrier for babies!

A loop down to the water overlooks the Long Island Sound and is gorgeous in every season. Although parts of the grade are steep (you’ll have to pick whether you want to tackle the steepest bit going up or down), my four-year-old can handle it with ease.

Wildlife abounds, including a chance to join in the annual Great Backyard Bird Count in February, or to seek out turtles, spotted salamanders, and insects as you hike.

Thanks to the Visitor Center with adjacent restrooms and water fountains, you never have to worry about pit stops or thirsty kids after the hike! We love that this place gets us out in nature without ever being far from creature comforts.
