Sequoia Park has a beautiful playground in the redwoods with a paved trail through the park.

In the late 1800s, 46.5 acres were purchased for $4,000 by a local, private landowner and gifted to the City of Eureka to create a public park. The land was the last large stand of redwood trees in the city. Although logging did occur within the park, some of the original 40 acres of old-growth forest is still standing. It was first named Forest Park, but was renamed as Sequoia Park in 1907 and is now 67 acres large, encompassing the zoo and flower garden. The park was named to honor the famous redwoods (Sequoia Sempervirens), the tallest trees in the world. It is really beautiful and lush. We took family pictures there one year with a local photographer. It does not feel remote or too private, but it is fairly quiet.

The main attrractions to Sequoia Park are the playground, the trails through the park, and the flower garden. The playground includes swings and a slide that comes out of the middle of redwood trunks. There is a grassy field, picnic tables, an ADA accessible restroom, and a gazebo bandstand. Hiking and bicycling are allowed on the unpaved trails as well as 1 mile of stroller accessible paved trails through the park. One paved trail is the old maintenance road (Milo Lane) that runs through the forest behind the zoo and the second is the Sequoia Creek Trail that heads west from the Duck Pond through meadows and loops back along a forested creek.

Just outside the zoo’s northern perimeter is the Sequoia Park Garden, a gorgeous collection of dahlias and other colorful blooms maintained by volunteers. The garden also features a wishing well and gazebo seating area.
