Visit a beautiful Civil War Battlefield in the Heart of Forest Hills!

We've been "micro-adventuring" somewhat due to the cold but mostly busy schedules, and this is a great civil war site right in south Nashville in the heart of Forest Hills that you can visit for a quick and beautiful 360 view of the Nashville skyline (especially in winter when the leaves are gone).  Shys Hill has a short walking trail up the hill, commemorative stone markers, and benches to enjoy the scenic views.  The critical action of the battle of Nashville happened right here!

The Battle of Nashville Trust owns a portion the Hill and leases the summit from the Tennessee Historical Society.  You'll see Minnesota referenced a couple of times (including the flag on the top of the hill!) and it's because the role of the Minnesota troops at Shy’s Hill and in the Battle of Nashville was important - they lost more troops than anyone else and played a pivotal role.  The trail-head kiosk contains interpretative maps, photos and descriptions of the battle.

The whole visit can last 15 minutes or longer if you want to linger.  I'd recommend bringing a snack picnic and staying for a bit.  Children can make the steep climb because it is relatively short (less than 0.25 miles up and down).

Parking is limited but there is a bit of space to pull over to the side and park near the marker on Benton Smith Drive.  Larger cars may prove difficult to park.

Note: "The possession and use of metal detectors for the purpose of relic hunting on Shy’s Hill property, as well as theft or damage relating to its structures and monuments, are strictly prohibited and violators will be prosecuted.  Area surveillance includes video monitoring."
