Learning and growing in the theater

The Discovery Theater has provided educational and cultural theater experiences for DC's children for the past 30 years. Shows are performed at three different locations, the Discovery Theater at the Ripley Center, the Baird Auditorium at the Natural History Museum and the Baird Auditorium at the Steven F. Udvar~Hazy Center. Ticket prices are reasonable, at 6 dollars per person.

The theater is run by the Smithsonian and is dedicated to their mission "The increase and diffusion of knowledge.”  meaning your kids will always learn something new while having an amazing time here. The shows often focus on understanding and celebrating cultural differences, history, and knowledge.

There are many opportunities to take in a show throughout the year. I  have been fortunate enough to see Seasons of Light, a traditional December performance at the Ripley Center, and it is one of my favorites. It celebrates the history and customs of Diwali (Devali), Chanukah, Las Posadas, Ramadan, Sankta Lucia Day, Kwanzaa, Christmas, and the First Nations’ tradition of the Winter Solstice. This show has been performed for 20 years.  It is a wonderful holiday tradition that the whole family will enjoy. Check out their schedule and try some shows, you won't be disappointed.

Being located on the National Mall, the theater is surrounded by fun and educational acivities, like the National Archives and the National Museum of Air and Space. If you're looking for food, Ella's Wood Fired Pizza isn't a far walk from the theater and always satisfies kiddos and adults alike.
