While there are 65 lighthouses in Maine to check out, few offer a chance for children to walk right up to them and actually go inside and explore. If your little one is interested in lighthouses like my 8-year-old, don't miss a stop at Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse in South Portland. Located on the breakwater at Southern Maine Community College, the park area surrounding Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse and the views of the Portland skyline are worth the visit.
The lighthouse is located at the end of a 900-foot breakwater that welcomes visitors to take a trek. The rocks are well situated and walkable for most children over age 7 or 8. At the end of the breakwater, you can touch the lighthouse. And, normally when COVID is not an issue, you can take a tour inside of the actual lighthouse.
In addition to the breakwater and lighthouse, there is a small sand beach for playing and a grassy lawn area with the remnant of an old fort's windows, which children find fun to look out at the ocean.
There is a small parking area, so you may want to arrive early on a beautiful summer day.
