Connected to the 4 mile greenway, this park has a playground, covered picnic area, disco golf, a small lake, and more.
Squirrel Lake is located in Matthews and offers playground equipment, restrooms, a picnic shelter, benches, a twelve-hole disc golf course, two permanent corn hole sets and a lake with a fishing pier. There's a short, natural surface trail that circles the lake. The playground features two structures, one for older kids and one fore younger. The larger one has several slides, climbing, bridges, and steps. The smaller structure is geared towards 5 and younger and features a couple of slides, climbing, tunnel, and steps to explore. There is also a set of swings with transitional and baby swings. Along with these play structures, there is a rock climbing wall and teeter totters. The playground is surrounded by mature trees but can get warm during the mid day sun. Luckily there is ample shade around the park plus covered picnic areas to cool off.
Walking towards the lake you will find permanent corn hole stations to play. The lake has a floating dock in which you can fish from. You can find fish, turtles, and water fowl at the lake.
Public restrooms are right next to the playground as well as a bike repair station
You can access the Matthews Four Mile Creek Greenway from here. (https://www.carolinathreadtrailmap.org/trails/trail/four-mile-creek-greenway-matthews) Great for bikes, strollers and hiking. Here's a greenway map.
Squirrel Lake Park hosts Nature Fest where families can enjoy nature related activities, crafts, and play. It's always one of our favorite festivals to come too
This is a favorite park to visit for us and I am sure you will enjoy it too. Once you are done playing, head to downtown Matthews for local eats and treats.
Don’t forget to bring:
-water and snacks – you’ll spend a long time here and there is a great picnic shelter
-comfortable shoes – for hiking the greenway or playing around the lake trail.
-bikes/scooters/helmets – the paved trail is great for anything with wheels
-hats/sunglasses/sunscreen – partial shade
