Sullivan' Island is a lovely escape with so much to explore right near Charleston.

Settled right at the mouth of the Charleston harbor is Sullivan’s Island, a 3.4-acre island and beach town.  Located about 20 minutes from downtown Charleston, Sullivan’s Island offers some of the nicest beaches in the Charleston area - not to mention history, watersports, local eats and shopping!

Middle St is the main road that offers the majority of restaurants and shops. The Obstinate Daughter is a favorite local restaurant on Sullivan’s (lunch and dinner).  A little further down Middle St is historic Fort Moultrie, which was used to stop ships from entering the harbor during the Civil War. Today, you can take a self-guided tour of Fort Moultrie and the surrounding National Park for only $3.  Sullivan’s Island location in the harbor is also ideal for kayaking, paddle boarding, kiteboarding and more. Take a stroll down the beach to peak at the Sullivan's Island lighthouse, also known as "Charleston Light".

Tips:

  • Street parking is free just pay attention to the signs and make sure your tires are off the grass.

  • During peak summer months, arrive early to ensure a good parking spot.

  • I like to go down past Fort Moultrie - smaller, less crowded beaches.

  • Vacation rentals on Sullivan’s are likely to be a little more expensive than those at Folly Beach, but the beaches are nicer.
