The Battery

outdoor-adventures, local-highlights

The Battery is among Charleston’s most-beloved and most photographed landmarks.  The fortified seawall wraps around the southernmost tip of the Charleston Peninsula where the Cooper and Ashley Rivers meet, and is nicknamed after historic Broughton’s Battery that was located there during the Civil War. One side of the Battery is lined with historic homes while the harbor side offers views of Fort Sumter, the Ravenel Bridge, and even the Sullivan’s Island lighthouse. Take a stroll down the 1.2 mile stretch and take in the views or take a seat on a bench in Battery Park. (See article “Battery Park/White Point Garden” for more info). In my opinion, it’s the best place to soak in a beautiful Charleston sunset.

Tips:

  • Bring sunscreen and bug spray in the summer.

  • Wear comfy shoes for walking.

  • You’ll definitely want your camera for this one.

  • Free street parking is available

  • There are no public bathrooms nearby.
