The Golden Gate Bridge is a must visit spot for tourists, but provides a great outdoor adventure for locals too!

Walk, run, bike, or tour this 1.7 mile long and 90 foot wide, iconic orange/red bridge while you take in views of Alcatraz Island and the Bay.  It takes about 35 minutes to walk across the entirety and half that to bike.  The pathway is hardly ever empty from tourists enjoying the scenery and snapping photos, but some times are better than others.  The morning can be foggy and busy with commuters, but overall, there are fewer people.  Afternoons can be busier with tourists, but the light is perfect and the fog is probably not present.  San Fransisco City Guides offers free walking Bridge tours on Thursdays and Sundays, if you are interested in learning a bit about the Bridge’s history.

Walkers are only permitted on the east sidewalk closer to the bay and they share it with bicycles until 3:30pm on weekdays.  On weekends and holidays, there are no bikes allowed on the east side, only the west.

From the SF end of the bridge, you can access The Welcome Center, Roundhouse Restaurant, Fort Point, and the Presidio. From the other end, there is a restroom, but not much else within walking distance. A popular way to travel across the bridge is by taking a bike one way to Sausalito, and then a ferry back.

Note that parking is extremely limited at the Golden Gate Bridge and taking public transit or ridesharing is highly encouraged. The parking lots are closed on weekends and holidays from 11am - 5pm.

Emily Coleman
Emily Coleman is a Jersey girl born and raised who caught the outdoor bug upon moving to Vermont to pursue a degree in Adventure Education and Environmental Studies from Green Mountain College. She spent most of her years before college deeply entrenched in the world of competitive cheerleading before discovering a passion for outdoor sports including mountain biking, white water kayaking, bikepacking, backpacking, slacklining, rock climbing, and skiing. Having been surrounded by children her entire life in her mother's daycare, she always had a strong affinity for kids. She moved to the mountains of Jackson Hole after graduating to coach for the local Kayak Club during the summers and nanny in the winters. Becoming a part of the Happy Active Family team felt like the perfect collision of her passion for building strong community bonds and encouraging an outdoor lifestyle.
