A hidden gem just outside of the city.
Union County Heritage Trail located south of Monroe, is located just behind the agricultural center. The trail head starts behind the center near the garden teaching area. This trail system is made up of several trails. The first part is the heritage trail was made by the local Boy Scout troops and is maintained by the master gardeners. This trail is about a quarter of a mile and then turns into one of the Carolina thread trails along with the Jesse Helms trail loop. This loop is approximately 2.5 miles of easy hills and terrain. We saw various wildlife and there were a couple of bridges to cross.
We suggest avoiding this trail after heavy rain as there is a section of the trail that crosses a creek without a bridge. Keep an eye out for snakes on the trail. We saw three while we hiked.
This trail would also makes a great easy trail run if you are into that too.
