Ski Whitetail with the Family: Around an Hour and a Half from the Washington, D.C. area!

Bundle up, pack up the boards, skis, boots, and poles, and hit the slopes for some fun quality time with your family just over an hour from DC!  Check out these winter skiing ideas!

This year you must make reservations in advance in order to ski. Check the website to make a reservation to ensure that you get the datsyou want as capacity on the mountain is limited. Indoor space is also limited capacity, and masks are required to be worn in all public spaces.

The weather may be slightly warmer than optimal around swampy DC in the winter, but the local ski resorts will be struggling to keep snow (man-made) on the mountain. As temperatures drop, the two closest ski resorts to DC, Whitetail Resort and Liberty Mountain make snow around the clock.

While skiing is never an inexpensive option, both resorts offer somewhat discounted junior pricing for kids ages 6 to 12. If you ski often, Whitetail is apart of the Epic Pass and could be worth your while to explore other resorts or just use at Whitetail.

Whitetail also has adventure tubing if you need a break from the slopes. Liberty has the same.

Whitetail is 89 miles fom DC and Liberty is 78. Both resorts offer overnight accommodations if you want to spend the night and make it a ski weekend.  Check the resort websites for lift tickets and ski rental rates.

Whitetail Mountain Resort is open Monday through Wednesday 9am to 5pm, Thursday through Saturday 9am to 9pm, and Sunday 9am to 8pm.

Elizabeth Regard
Liz Regard was raised in Pottstown, PA and first came to DC for college. After a four-year stint in New York City in the buying office of Bloomingdales after graduating, she returned to the DC area for law school and never left. It’s been 19 years and counting! She lives in Dupont Circle with her husband, Dan, their girls, Amelia and Felicity, and dog, Rugby, and works part-time for an international trade law firm. While Liz always liked exploring the city before the girls came on the scene, having kids opened up a whole new world of adventure. Everyone was happier when they were outside, so Liz spent a lot of time online researching fun activities and destinations. She really needed Happy Active Family. Now, she’s just excited to be creating this amazing resource for families across the nation with her friend, Caitlin. In their free time, Liz and her family love to travel and are slowly trying to visit every playground in the DMV area.
