From November to early April, weather permitting, you can get your skate on (ice skate, that is) in the beautiful outdoors of Prospect Park! The LeFrak Center at Lakeside, in the eastern side of the Prospect Park, features 32,000 square feet of ice skating on two rinks -- one open-air and the other covered. Weekend with nice weather tend to be super busy, so be prepared for some lines at check-in and some crowded rinks.

It's a bit pricey  -- $7.50/admission during the week and $11 on weekends, along with a $8 skate rental fee. But once you've paid and laced up, you can stay as long as you please. They also rent wooden penguins as skate-aids ($12 for 30 minutes; $17 for an hour), $6 helmet rentals, and locker rentals.

All that said, it's an idyllic location and the crowd is mostly families with children, so it's an all-around happy experience. Both of my daughters loved our visit last weekend and we spent about 3 hours there, alternating between skating and relaxing at the tables connected to the on-site Bluestone Cafe.
