A hiking oasis for families with little ones!
Less than a ten-minute drive from the bustling downtown shopping area of Freeport (home of LL Bean) and thirty minutes north of Portland, you’ll find Wolfe’s Neck State Park. This 245-acre park has 5 miles of walking trails, all of them extremely well marked and easy to walk. Situated on the narrow peninsula called Wolfe’s Neck, the park is a rural oasis of trees, trails, and serenity, with views of gorgeous Casco Bay on one side and the Harraseeket River on the other.
All trails are easy for families with children of all ages. The majority are short, with many just 1/2 a mile. The longest, the Haraseeket Trail, winds for 1.8 miles through the park, finishing off with a loop past gorgeous Casco Bay on the way back to the parking lot.
On a recent weekend, we hiked the Haraseeket Trail with five children, ranging in age from 3 to 12, and all agreed it was a fun, mostly easy walk with lots of great views and fun rocks and downed trees to climb upon.
There is a picnic area and clean restrooms at the parking area, which often fills up early.
