A park with a wonderful playground with a sandbox, musical features, a water fountain, miniature train and so much more!

Whether you’re a local or a visitor to Austin, everyone agrees that Zilker Metropolitan Park is a must-see for families. This 351-acre park is home to a number of activities to explore with kids, but one favorite for small children is the Zilker Park Playground. Located next to Barton Springs, this playground is vast and interactive. Kiddos can slide, swing, climb an antique fire truck or ocean animal sculptures, explore a sand pit and make music. The water fountain is shaped like an open lion’s mouth. Quite possibly the most exciting feature of this playscape is the Zilker Zephyr miniature train that (safely) chugs right through the playground! (See the Zilker Zephyr activity article for more on how to ride). The pavilion just outside the playground is some welcome shade for a picnic on a warm day. It is reservable for birthday parties, field trips, and more.

Head down the stairs at the far left side of the playground for a beautiful view of Barton Creek and you’ll likely see dogs swimming in the cold water. This area, playfully nicknamed “Barking Springs,” is a fun place to explore and take photos - you can even rent a boat if you follow the path to the left.
