Delmarva Discovery Center and Museum in Pocomoke City, MD
The Delmarva Discovery Center in Pocomoke City, Maryland may be one of the area’s best kept secrets. The museum is small but its exhibits are easily entertaining enough to fill half a day. We went to the museum expecting it to have a nature center feel, but it was so much more than that.
A large focus of the museum is, of course, the animal life in the Delaware-Maryland-Virginia (Delmarva) region. Kids can see the snakes, turtles and sea life that is native to the area but the discovery centers goes way beyond a few aquariums. Kids can touch horseshoe crabs, eels, and more in a large touch tank. However, the real show stoppers are Mac and Tuck, the museum’s resident River Otters.
Seriously, you’ve never met a more charming River Otter in your life. The social animals were more than happy to swim and run back and forth with our children along the front of their enclosure. This got more than a few squeals of delight from both the kids and the adults. You will not want to miss the daily noon otter show where you can listen to a talk about the otters and see their lunchtime and enrichment activities. If you go for nothing else, just go to see Mac and Tuck!
In addition to the exhibits on animal life, the museum offers a rich explanation and history of Native American tribes that once inhabited the area. Visitors can also learn about the history of the oyster and boating industry in the area. The best part is that all of these exhibits are hands on and of high interest, even to smaller children. Kids can climb inside a wigwam, try their hand at driving a boat, or even pretend to sail the high seas.
The museum doesn’t offer food or a dining area but you can eat a packed lunch at the park that’s across the street. There’s also a restaurant next door as well as a great coffee shop called The Daily Brew with soups and sandwiches, about 15 minutes away.
If you’re planning a visit to the Eastern Shore of Maryland or are looking for a great indoor activity for a rainy day, Delmarva Discovery Center is one of the most family friendly museums in the area!
