Our most favorite family activity in Portland is to visit the Eastern Promenade, a 68-acre historic landscape on the easternmost end of the Portland peninsula. The park itself provides tons of grassy space for relaxing, having a picnic lunch, or just staring at the gorgeous views of Casco Bay and Portland Harbor. On most days you’ll find at least three or four food trucks parked along the Promenade, offering anything from high-end sushi to vegan burgers.

There are activities to keep all members of the family busy, including a beach, a playground, and various sports areas.

The East End Beach is situated mid-Promenade (follow Cutter Street from the Eastern Promenade down to the water) and is a popular destination for both Portland residents and visitors looking for a relaxing and super convenient spot to sunbathe, swim, or adventure. Kayak rentals are located on the beach, and there is a public boat launch as well.  Here you will also find public restrooms.

Back up the hill and onto the Promenade you’ll find the Eastern Promenade Playground, a great spot for the kids to run and play while adults sit on nearby benches and take in the views. To the left of the playground, you’ll find tennis and basketball courts and baseball fields.

While there, don’t forget to check out the two-mile Eastern Promenade Trail which brings you from the beach to downtown Portland in one direction and to Back Cove in the other direction.
