John West Park in Ocean View, Delaware

We visit a lot of playgrounds and, I have to say, John West Park outside of Bethany Beach is one of our favorites. Every year, on our way home from our week on the eastern shore, we grab a coffee and a muffin from Drifting Grounds and spend the morning at John West Park.

John West Park is great not only because of its idyllic green trees and lovely gazebos (complete with rocking chairs!), but also because of the fabulous playground equipment. It’s like no other play equipment that I’ve ever seen, and the kids love it.

Little ones (and more adventurous grown ups) can spin on a huge merry-go-round, walk across a springboard bridge, or traverse a chain wall. The park also has more traditional equipment for climbing and sliding as well as swings if you’re a traditionalist. Families with little ones will also appreciate a dedicated toddler area that’s fenced in and separate from where big kids may be running. The park also has some limited paved paths that would allow for light scooter or bike riding. If you’re feeling really ambitious, the park even offers an adult exercise area with stationary equipment for strength training exercises.

A bathroom is provided during the regular season, although it may be closed in the winter time. The entire park is pretty shady so it’s a great option if it’s a hot day. You’ll also find a covered pavilion with picnic tables inside if you plan to bring a picnic.

If you’re looking for a great way to spend a couple hours, John West Park is a great choice!

Our work in Baltimore is truly a family affair. Husband and wife, Matt and Katie, work together to head up our ambassador team in Charm City. Katie is a Maryland native and has lived in the state her whole life. She moved to Baltimore in 2007 after graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. She has been working in the field of early childhood education as a teacher and family coach for the past 12 years. Katie also holds a Masters of Education in Literacy from Loyola University. She is passionate about giving kids and families the knowledge and tools that they need to thrive. Matt grew up in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore. As a city native, Matt is a great resource on all that the city has to offer. After months of helping Katie explore the city for her role at a Happy Active Family, he decided to put his love of writing to use and officially come on board as an ambassador. Matt and Katie have two girls, ages 5 and 7. They spend their weekends camping, hiking, or exploring other hidden gems in their area. Tap into their insider knowledge by downloading the app today!
