A park with many opportunities for fresh-air fun, including biking or walking and playgrounds, gardens, and an aquatic center.
The beach and paths at Lions Park are our family's go-to weekend boredom buster. It's perfect for an hour or two of fresh air, sunshine, and out-of-the-house activity without having to leave town.
The Beach:
The sandy beach is on the southern edge of Sloan Lake. It's quite primitive without any bells or whistles; but there's never a crowd of people, either. There's no lifeguard, no picnic tables, little shade, and no swimming allowed. But my kids and I love to take off our shoes, roll up our pants and wade in the water on hot days. Bring a few sand toys or find some sticks around for castle building or hole digging. There are a couple of nearby park benches, but a camp chair is nice if you plan to stay awhile. There's also a small boat dock on the eastern side of the beach that's great for testing how far you can throw rocks into the water. In the summer, the city sometimes rents paddleboats, as well. Call (307) 637-6423 to ask if they're renting boats while you'll be there.
In the winter months, the lake freezes. My kids love to walk out on the lake a little and giggle at the geese slipping and sliding around. Ice-fishers often set up camp out in the middle, as well. Pro tip: toss a rock out on the ice and listen to the mesmerizing sound it makes as it slides across the ice.
Just south of the beach is a large picnic shelter with tables and benches, a playground and a restroom facility.
The Paths:
Lions Park is criss-crossed by sidewalk and asphalt paths. We frequently walk or ride bikes on the path that circles the lake, which is almost exactly one mile. There are exercise stations along the path, and a playground on the northern side of the lake. My kids love to explore the dirt paths that they find, as well. Some are easy to follow and others fizzle out in thorny shrubbery, but that's part of the fun. There are one or two drinking fountains along the path, but it's best to bring your own water, as the fountains aren't always working.
We're not a fishing family, but we almost always see fishermen at various spots around the lake.
