Miss Shirley’s Cafe is an award winning Baltimore staple, originally located in Roland Park and with newer locations in the Inner Harbor and Annapolis.

If you take nothing else from this article, please let me stress that the earlier you get there, the better.  You’ll be spending some time waiting but the meal will be worth it, even if you have little ones in tow. We recently visited the Inner Harbor location and were directed to visit their “Sky Lobby,” a rented conference room on the 3rd floor with panoramic views of the downtown skyline, family games, children’s books and a separate bar where you can purchase coffee, mimosas and Bloody Mary’s while you wait.

When the table was ready, the hostess provided children’s activity pages, crayons and story books to read while we waited for our food. We were pleasantly greeted by our server, despite the obvious fact that she was in the thick of the Sunday Brunch Crowd and immediately asked if anyone at the table suffered from any food allergies.  (I’ve since been told that Miss Shirley’s is the best if you need to accommodate special dietary restrictions.

When the food arrives you’ll feel like your server left the cafe, drove quickly to their grandmother’s house and returned with an amazing breakfast in an unbelievably short period of time.  Take for instance the Gravy Train Southern Skillet from my last visit… fried buttermilk boneless chicken breast on a house made biscuit, collard greens with ham, grits, sausage gravy, cheddar, and a sunny side up egg all dusted with Cajun Spices.  For those with a sweet tooth, good luck choosing among their varied pancake options, french toast and waffles.

If you haven’t already seen them featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, please make a visit to one of their locations a priority.  Open Monday through Friday from 7 am to 3 pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm. Or check their website for Pick Up as well as Delivery availability.

Our work in Baltimore is truly a family affair. Husband and wife, Matt and Katie, work together to head up our ambassador team in Charm City. Katie is a Maryland native and has lived in the state her whole life. She moved to Baltimore in 2007 after graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. She has been working in the field of early childhood education as a teacher and family coach for the past 12 years. Katie also holds a Masters of Education in Literacy from Loyola University. She is passionate about giving kids and families the knowledge and tools that they need to thrive. Matt grew up in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore. As a city native, Matt is a great resource on all that the city has to offer. After months of helping Katie explore the city for her role at a Happy Active Family, he decided to put his love of writing to use and officially come on board as an ambassador. Matt and Katie have two girls, ages 5 and 7. They spend their weekends camping, hiking, or exploring other hidden gems in their area. Tap into their insider knowledge by downloading the app today!
