hikes, outdoor-adventures

Parkville Nature Sanctuary was one of my very favorite nature spots we visited during our time in Kansas City.

This nature area is just stunning. I knew I wanted to visit here, but even so, when we arrived, it felt like we were discovering a hidden gem. We only ran into one other family there, so we basically had this gorgeous winter wonderland all to ourselves. It was so quiet and beautiful! Right when we arrived, I knew we could be happy spending all day there. Unfortunately, I hadn't packed lunch, so I would do that a bit differently next time and build in more time here.

This nature sanctuary features 115 acres of pristine outdoor area, with 3 miles of hiking trails, as well. It's just the right size for plenty of fun. The hiking trails were wonderful for families and were not too steep in the areas we hiked them. Being that we visited in winter, we brought a little shovel for the kids and a snowball maker, and we played in the snow the entire time. The kids had a blast shoveling snow about the forest, making snowballs, searching for sticks, and just hiking and playing around. It was a wonderful place to slow down and play in the quiet of nature.

This nature sanctuary also features a shelter they call "The Girl Scout Cabin" that you can rent in three-hour blocks of time. Parkville Nature Sanctuary also offers restrooms, garbage bins throughout, signage on the trails, and ample parking in the lot. Be advised that the trails are all unpaved, so it's your call if you'd like to bring your stroller along, or leave it behind. Also note, no dogs are allowed in this nature sanctuary.

I highly recommend a stop at Parkville Nature Sanctuary. After enjoying some nature time here, head over to Kate's Kitchen for some delicious, home-cooked meals for your whole family.
