Ready, set, it's time to take off to Runway Park and Playground!
Airplane lovers will want to fly to this park. Located next to the Greenville Downtown Airport, Runway Park is so fun. This aviation-themed park is fully fenced in and features two play structures, a paved walking path, a covered picnic shelter, and educational signage. When you first walk into the park, you walk under a tunnel and down what looks like a mini runway. Then you will see the playgrounds on both sides of the runway.
The first play structure features a large climbing wall, several slides, multiple ways to climb, steps, ladders, a bridge, and interactive play stations. The second structure, geared toward younger kids, features several slides, steps, climbing, bridges, and interactive play stations along with some ride-on bouncing toys, and a swing set. Both areas are filled in with mulch. There is also a metal plane structure for kids to climb and pretend to fly on.
Next to the play area is the large covered picnic shelter with ten picnic tables to enjoy. The whole playground space has no shade except for the covered picnic space. This can get pretty warm in the summer. However, it's a great spot to enjoy in the cooler months or just come early or late during the day in the summer. The restrooms can be found behind the picnic shelter.
There is a nice paved walking track that goes around the park. There is educational signs that talk about all things aviation. This walking path is perfect for pushing a stroller, young bike riders, scooters, and ride-on toys. It's a small enough track that you can walk while the kids play on the playground. There are also benches along the path to sit and relax and watch the planes take off and land. Of course, the kids' favorite is watching all the small prop planes taxi, take off, and land.
Next to the playground is a Runway Cafe which serves American fare and is an event banquet hall. So if you don't want to bring lunch or eat dinner out and then play, this is the perfect little spot. They have both inside and outdoor seating too.
Runway Park is a great little spot to enjoy watching the planes while also playing. Stay tuned as they are building a mini-golf course next to the playground. Check this playground out for a unique outing.
