Soapstone Valley Trail in Rock Creek Park

outdoor-adventures, hikes

A hidden gem of a trail that weaves along with the River Bed.

Crossing through Forest Hills toward Rock Creek Park, this trail follows a stream for about 1.2 miles (just under 2.4 miles out and back). There is ample parking along Albemarle Road but it is only two-hour parking, so if you are planning a long hike, look for non-timed parking on cross streets in the area.

If less than two hours suits you, the trail can be accessed at different points along the road but we recommend parking toward the Connecticut Avenue just past 32nd Street on Albemarle and entering the trail from there. The road is busier at this end, since it is near busy Connecticut Avenue, so if you prefer, park further into the residential neighborhood where you can enter the trail about midway at access points toward the end of the dead ends, near Linnean or 29th Streets.

The trail is wide enough that people can pass at a comfortable distance, but keep in mind it does cross the stream at seven different points, and some crossings are more challenging than others. Small children may need help navigating the rocks at certain points. Also, be prepared with appropriate footwear such as rain boots, waterproof hiking shoes, or footwear that won't be uncomfortable when wet. We like to keep a change of footwear and clothing back at the car for post-hike comfort.

Additionally, while we enjoyed a fun and successful hike with three preschoolers, there are many rocks, tree roots and steep points where climbing little ones can stumble, so it's better if they don't outnumber you by more than one, and always be prepared to offer them a steady hand perhaps not from a parent also carrying a baby in a front pack.

Bring wipes (for muddy spills), water and snacks! I also suggest having hand sanitizer because the kids love splashing in the water, and while it doesn't feel like it at most points of Soapstone Valley Trail, it is still in the middle of the city!

In fact, it is just a five to ten-minute walk from the Van Ness-UDS Metro Station. Bread Furst is on the way if you wish to stop for a treat to bring on your hike. When you start on this (the Connecticut Avenue) side of the trail, you can cross over the busy Broad Branch Road at the end of the Soapstone Valley Trail if you wish to continue your adventure on the Western Ridge Trail of Rock Creek Park. Alternatively, for some playground time, Forest Hills Park is a short walk from the trailhead.

If you begin on the other side, you can also tour the beautiful Hillwood Estate, Museum, and Gardens and access the trail from the Rock Creek Park end, which is very close.

It is a shady hike, but the sun peaks through the trees, so while it is not as buggy as it could be, bug spray is still useful in the warmer months.
