There is so much to explore at this lovely state park.
South Mountain is a rugged state park that boasts an 80-foot waterfall, mountain streams, and more than 40 miles of trails for hikers, equestrian, and backpackers. The visitor center has maps available. The parking lot for these trails is at the very end of the road.
The Hemlock Nature Trail is a short nature trail that runs parallel to the start of the High Shoals Falls Trail. This trail features several display signs for educational purposes, access to the river for fishing, and a small pier to look out over the river. At the end of this trail, it connects with the High Shoals Falls Trail. This trail is stroller friendly.
The High Shoals Falls Trail can either be started from the parking lot or from the nature trail. From the parking lot, it’s approximately a mile to the loop. I recommend staying to the left as you go up the falls. This allows you to climb up to the falls. If you take the loop to the right you will end up walking down the falls. Kids will have a blast climbing up the rocks and stairs to reach the falls. The whole loop is about 1.5 miles with an elevation gain of 550 feet. This trail is good for all ages but the littles might get tired on the way up to the falls. Part of this trail connects with the equestrian trail so you might see some horses walking alongside. This trail is not stroller friendly when you get to the loop, a carrier is recommended.
Tips:
- Be sure to hit the trail early especially during the summer months and weekends. The parking lot fills up quickly as this is a popular place for hiking.
- There are picnic tables near the parking lot. Bring food for hiking and after to relax in the trees.
- Bring a fishing pole to fish for trout in the river that runs along the trail. Check the website for specifics on catch and release dates.
