An unexpected adventure in DC for modern kids, fascinated by the art of snail mail.
The Smithsonian National Postal Museum is one of those places that you likely will never hear about if you don't have children. And if you do have children, even then it's a bit of a hidden gem. While it may not sound too exciting, this is a truly excellent museum, especially for little children, although older children will also find plenty of things of interest, too.
The museum's exhibits focus on postal history from colonial times to the present and stamps/stamp collecting. Located next to Union Station, this museum is compact, making it a great place to spend a morning with a child who might still be napping. It's the perfect size for a short adventure and it is rarely crowded! The best part about the museum is that it offers lots of interactive exhibits, including the cab of a Mack truck that kids can sit in, and even a stagecoach.
The museum hosts special events, including monthly storytimes and great activities during the holidays, so check the website before your visit. The gift shop is also lovely.
Stroll just over ten minutes toward downtown for a treat afterward. The Tropical Smoothie Cafe is a delicious option, or for more of a sit down experience - hit up The Hamilton for something a little more special with the kids. The restaurant is also less than ten minutes on foot. In fact, based on its location, The Hamilton is a great lunch spot if you are en route to more of the Smithsonian family of museums, or perhaps the United States Botanic Garden - both areas are just about five minutes further when walking.
