Shad Landing at Pocomoke River State Park in Snow Hill, Maryland

Pocomoke River State Park is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland along the scenic Pocomoke River. The park is divided into two sections: Shad Landing and Milburn Landing. We had the pleasure of staying at Shad Landing during a camping trip to the area and we were not disappointed.

The entire park is bordered by the Pocomoke River and Corker’s Creek on the eastern side. Having a water feature at a state park is cool enough, but these aren’t just any old rivers. As the Maryland Department of Natural Resources explains it: “The Great Cypress Swamp originates on the Maryland-Delaware border and flows southwest for 73 miles before emptying into Pocomoke Sound. It is the northernmost bald cypress swamp in the United States.”

Our favorite part of the trip was being able to canoe The Corker’s Creek Trail. Canoes and kayaks are available for rental onsite and come with a copy of the Corker’s Creek Canoe Trail Guide- Life in a Bald Cypress Swamp. The self-guided interpretive map will take you on a 2-mile paddle through the swamp. The entire trip takes about an hour and ended up being the perfect length for the 5 and 7 year old kids that we had in tow. We spotted turtles, all kinds of birds, frogs plus tons of interesting plant life that we had never seen before.

If you’re planning on camping, we recommend checking out the Water’s Edge Camping loop. It will put you in close proximity to the water as well as the playground and camp store.

If you stay at Shad Landing in the summertime, you can also take advantage of a swimming pool. The pool doesn’t have any bells or whistles, but it will do if you really need to take a dip on a hot day. The park also offers a small nature center that can get you out of the rain for a bit if the weather is uncooperative.   (If you’re looking for an indoor activity that can fill a larger portion of the day, we recommend the Delmarva Discovery Center and Museum!) For families that would like to hike, look to the left when you exit the nature center and you’ll find an easy trail that is flat and short, making it perfect for little ones.

Overall, Shad Landing is a great spot for families that are looking to camp on the Eastern Shore or in search of a great place for canoeing and kayaking with the kids!
